Belize is located South of Mexico and East of Guatemala on the archipelago linking North and South america. It is a country in the carribean made up of the mainland and a number of islands and atolls. It is a place of intense natural beauty with lush tropical rain forests and pristine white sandy beaches. It is now considered to have been the centre of the Mayan civilisation which mysteriously disappeared at the beginning of the 1500s. Whether this was caused by famine, disease, natural disaster of something entirely unexpected makes Belize appear quite mysterious. This can be compounded by the fact that it is not unusual to find large Mayan ruins hidden by the rain forest. The one main area of concern is the Capital City (once named Belize City,) which suffers form a large amount of street crime and gang warfare. Aside from this Belize is a tropical paradise and one of the gateways to the Carribean.
