"In the centre of North Rhine-Westphalia Land, located in one of the most culturally active landscapes anywhere in Europe, Dortmund is a city full of artistic energy and variety. The many modern museums and art galleries, the theatre and the opera house are all impressive evidence of this, as is the broad music scene that embraces everything from jazz club performances to huge concerts in the Westphalia Halls.
Independent drama groups, artists, musicians and authors also provide those all important impulses for cultural life in the city. Precedent setting cooperation between the ""indie scene"" and the city's arts, culture and entertainment agencies have now become a Dortmund trademark. In charge of planning the cultural programmes and festivals and of supporting the work of the independents is the City of Dortmund Culture Bureau (Kulturbüro). There are eleven arts and culture centres in the city, the majority of them independent, whose artistic activities the Kulturbüro is pleased to promote from rock and jazz to drama and fine art.
In autumn, the German Heritage Society stages its annual Super Oktoberfest with entertainment, lots of music and dancing, and German-Canadian food and drink.
One of the highlights of the Christmas season is St. Nikolaus Tag, when St. Nikolaus visits the children of the community.
There are also plenty of museums and galleries, like the Humboldt & District Museum and Gallery.
This museum is housed in the old Post Office building. The Post Office was built in 1912 and expanded in 1955. After the Post Office moved to a new building in 1975, this building ceased to have an official occupant until 1982 when the museum opened.
A unique aspect of our history is the Humboldt Telegraph Station. An exhibit showing the station circa 1885 is located on the 3rd floor of the Museum.
From the outside, the museum is easily identified with its Romanesque style and clock tower.
