The island of Formentera is part of the Balearic archipelago and is the smallest island in area. It is located in the center of the western Mediterranean, to the east of the Iberian Peninsula. Together Formentera and Ibiza make up the Pitiusa Islands.Ibiza and Formentera are separated by a narrow strait called "Es Freus" that is surrounded by small islets.
There are a total of five watchtowers along the coast of Formentera. The first watchtower to be built was on the island of Espalmador and it was followed by the watchtowers of Punta Prima, La Gavina, Cap de Barbaria, and Es Pi dŽes Catala. Over the years the condition of the watchtowers has deteriorated but they are still very impressive.
