It was originally inhabited by a Celtic tribe - the Volques Tectosages. Its favourable climate and geographical situation made it an ally of Rome in the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D. (Toulouse was then the 4th city in the western empire) and the centre of the Visigoth kingdom in the 5th century. Later, in the 6th century, it was placed under the aegis of King Clovis.
It was in the 9th century that Toulouse was to know its first hours of glory thanks to the series of hereditary counts named Raymond, who were to give Toulouse one of the most famous institutions: a chapter of administrators, the Capitouls. These elected representatives from the corporations numbered 12 in 1141.
Now it is an extremely lively and vibrant town, enjoying the warm climate of the region.
