"HONDURAS
"Most visits to Honduras are trouble free, according to the Foreign Office. Honduras is the second poorest country in Central America; it has virtually no tourists; The military is tough; The people are shy but friendly.
WHY GO THERE?
This is an exciting, undiscovered, Central American country. It has the great Mayan city of Copan. There are beautiful beaches. The colonial churches, the villages, the rain forest, the markets and the people are all fascinating. This is more real than Costa Rica.
The capital, Tegucigalpa, is a sleepy, run-down, sprawling little city with lots of slum areas. The Parque Central is worth a visit. Otherwise, just stroll. For nightlife, try Boulevard Morazin with its comfortable bars and restaurants.
HOW TO GET THERE- There are no package tours in the main brochures. Choose a safe airline. Be aware that landing at the airport in the capital, although safer than it used to be, is a bit scary. There are lots of mountains around and it can be cloudy and misty. There used to be lots of crashes before they improved the airport.
WHERE TO STAY - In the capital city of Tegucigalpa you could stay at the posh Honduras Maya Hotel. The other places are cheap but not so comfy.
SAFETY - HURRICANES can be a problem.
There is a lot of violent crime, so be careful at night and in areas where assaults might take place (bus stations, beaches...)
VISAS - Get a 30 day visit visa on arrival.
